Recently we were contacted by a homeowner that was dealing with a situation in their yard that was causing water to pool on top of the soil. When we arrived, we opened a dosing tank that had been installed as a measure to pump the liquid effluent from the septic system uphill to their drain field.
Upon inspection of the dosing tank, it was evident that the tank had become damaged due to an inundation of water from the soil pressing on the seam of the two-piece tank. Water was running into the tank at the rate of approximately 1 gallon per minute, which was being pumped into their drain field. Our initial suspicion was that the drain field had become completed saturated with this groundwater, and it was surfacing at the bottom of the hill nearest their house and then standing to become muddle puddles in the yard.
We immediately involved the office of Environmental Health within this county, and they came out to determine whether or not the surfacing water was tied into the septic system. They made the determination that the visible water was in fact not from the septic system, but was actually groundwater from an underground spring.
The homeowner asked us to come up with solutions for both problems. We mutually decided upon installing a new, one-piece dosing tank without a cement seam to prevent groundwater from entering the tank and being pumped up to the drain field. Additionally, we devised a system that included a french drain and a dry well to collect the groundwater from the soil, and had it pumped uphill to a rainwater collection culvert on the edge of his property. These two systems work together to keep groundwater out of his septic system, and to move groundwater from his yard into the municipal rainwater runoff collection system.
